"A classic first leg"

05ers' reactions to the draw in Olomouc

SIGMA OLOMOUC 0-0 MAINZ 05

Niko Bungert: “It wasn’t a high-quality game. We played against a team that, as expected, were tactically well organised and made life difficult for us, especially since we didn’t have our best day. We rarely found ways to create dangerous chances and there were also the two very close offside decisions. Even so, we’re in a manageable situation going into the next leg and, hopefully in front of a full house, everything is still in our hands. With Silas, we fear he’s got a broken shinbone. That’s very bitter because he’s a really positive guy and someone that has had back luck with injuries in the past. Focus moves to the Bremen game at the weekend now.”

Daniel Batz: “It was a classic first leg. We were very static in the first half, although we were solid defensively. We addressed some things at half time, such as the space behind Olomouc’s high defensive line. Things improved, but we didn’t always have that balance between long balls and controlled build-up play. Ideally, we would have won today, but this doesn’t change anything and we’ll settle things in the home game. I had nothing to do for 88 minutes, and it could have been a whole game with nothing. It’s what I’m there for, though. All in all, it was a nice experience, especially for the fans who once again gave it their absolute all. It’s now about the next game.”

Paul Nebel: “It definitely wasn’t our best performance, especially before the break. It got better afterwards, but overall it’s good to have not lost away from home. We simply weren’t dangerous enough going forward. I’m convinced that with the fans behind us next week we can get it done. The atmosphere was amazing today. We’ll just have to postpone the celebrations for a week.”
