Marco Richter and 1. FSV Mainz 05 agreed to terminate his contract on Tuesday. Richter will therefore be considered a player without a valid contract going forward, giving him the opportunity to join a new club even after the transfer window has closed. The 28-year-old midfielder will continue to train with Mainz 05’s first-team squad.

Mainz 05 sporting director Niko Bungert said: “In our discussions with Marco over the past few weeks, we had developed the plan that he would take on a new sporting challenge. Despite a number of exciting options, the right one was not yet among them. In order to avoid the time pressure towards the end of the transfer window, we agreed with Marco to terminate his contract, which means he can also sign for another club beyond deadline day. We will continue to support him in being able to serve as an immediate reinforcement for any possible new club, without a long settling-in period, thanks to an excellent level of fitness. Marco will therefore continue to train with us at top level as part of the team.”
