Mainz 05 are still waiting for their first win of the season in front of their home fans at the MEWA ARENA. The 05ER suffered their third defeat in four home games this campaign, falling 2-3 to SV Werder Bremen. Niclas Füllkrug gave the visitors a two-goal lead with a pair of penalties during a difficult opening spell for Mainz. Anthony Caci pulled one back before the break, and the hosts even had several good chances to draw level. Urs Fischer's side stepped up the pressure in the second half, but Werder proved more clinical in a physical and fiercely contested encounter. Ludovit Reis extended Bremen's lead with a deflected effort following a counterattack, before Jae-sung Lee immediately brought Mainz back into the game with a header. Despite the hosts' relentless efforts to find another goal, Bremen defended with determination and held on to secure a narrow victory.
With the win, Werder move ahead of Mainz in the Bundesliga table, leaving the 05ER in seventh place with ten points from seven matches.
