From Bruchweg to Tyrol: First impressions from Mainz’s training camp

Nine days of preparation at a familiar base

With plenty of new and familiar faces on board, Mainz 05’s first-team players set off for their training camp at 10:00 today. The destination was a familiar one: for the third year in a row, Mainz will be based at the Hohe Salve Sportresort. A nine-day training camp now awaits the team there, as they look to lay further foundations in order to be at their best for the start of the season. Mainz will travel to Krieschow on 23 August for their first competitive match, in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Six days later, newly promoted SC Paderborn will visit the MEWA ARENA for the Bundesliga opener.

After arriving at 16:00, the team completed an activation run before having dinner together at the hotel. World Cup participants Kaishu Sano and Jae-sung Lee were also present. The squad is further supplemented by seven academy players: Taiyu Yamazaki, Jeremiah Debrah, Rael Nakuzola, Daniel Imafidon and Alynho Haidara, all of whom had already been involved with the first-team squad in previous friendlies. Louis Babatz and Luke Gauer complete the goalkeeping quartet.

Public training sessions and friendlies

Training begins on Tuesday. The team will complete their first public training session in Wörgl at 10:30 (all dates can be found here as usual). Towards the end of the week, two real tests await the squad, with friendlies against Shabab Al-Ahli and Udinese Calcio scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Both matches will be played over 90 minutes and will also be broadcast live on 05ER.tv.
