Moreno Fell’s “special story” to continue at Mainz

Fabio Moreno Fell has agreed to an early contract extension with 1. FSV Mainz 05. The 25-year-old joined the 05ers’ U23 side in the summer from TSV Gau-Odernheim as the Verbandsliga Südwest’s top goalscorer (50 goals) and has so far made the most of his opportunity to gain a foothold in professional football.

His eye for goal and strong understanding of the game helped Moreno Fell adapt to the level of the Regionalliga Südwest in a very short time. He has played a major role in the U23’s successful season so far, and is currently their top goalscorer with nine goals in 16 matches. The down-to-earth striker has been rewarded for his efforts, as he is a familiar face in first-team training and now also in Bundesliga and Conference League matchday squads. The forward was handed debuts in both the league against Mönchengladbach and in Europe against Poznań recently.

“There are sometimes special stories in football,” said Meikel Schönweitz, technical director at Mainz 05. “It’s extraordinary to watch a player in the Verbandsliga in Gau-Odernheim in the spring and then see him playing in the Bundesliga by the end of the year. That is the result of hard work and versatility. Fabio has shown his qualities consistently since the start of the season and, being the humble guy he is, is completely focused on his job. That’s why we reached out to him some time ago to talk about an early contract extension. We’re very pleased to continue seeing Fabio in a Mainz shirt and to accompany him on his continued development.”
