"I am nevertheless proud of our second half of the season"

Reaction following defeat to Union

Mainz 05 1-3 Union Berlin

Niko Bungert: “It was unfortunately not the final home match we had hoped for. In the first half you could feel that the air had kind of gone out of things, and we deserved to go behind. We created real pressure at the start of the second period, making it 1-1 and pushing on. It was unlucky that Tietz’s spectacular goal didn’t count. With each of the two late goals, we were not aggressive or alert enough. If you conceded goals like those then you cannot win any game in the Bundesliga. That somewhat killed the atmosphere here today. We have achieved the goal we set out in the winter but would have happily taken the three points.”

Sheraldo Becker: “We made it tricky for ourselves before the break, which was not great. Things got a lot better after half-time and we were full of courage, back in the contest. We chucked it all away though in the last 10 minutes. It was our final home game, and we wanted to win it but we need to do the basics right in order to be able to do that. All of us know that. We had to do more when on top at the start of the second half.”

Robin Zentner: “It felt like a long time out, so I’m pleased to be able to get back on the pitch this season. That was extra special to do in the first game after securing safety. After half-time you felt the energy that has shaped us over the last few months. The goal that was chalked off was annoying. Union didn’t create a lot but we did not utilise our chances. The late goals are frustrating.”
