“Too passive after the break”

05ers’ reactions to the defeat to Bayern

MAINZ 05 3-4 BAYERN MÜNCHEN

Niko Bungert: “It was a spectacular game and we’re frustrated to have not taken anything from it against the best team in Europe – maybe even the world. The next few weeks will show that. In the end, the statistics actually favour us, and overall it was a good performance. Unfortunately, we let ourselves be overwhelmed by Bayern’s intensity after the break. Today, it was the little things that were missing, but we gave everything.”

Phillipp Mwene: “It became difficult at 3-1 because Bayern realised there was something in the game for them. We stopped capitalising on our counter-attacks and that made things tricky for us. Overall, we were too passive after the break. Bayern are the best team in Europe for a reason. We can take a lot from the first half, but we need to analyse the second half closely. Bayern aren’t the benchmark to which we should set our standards.”

Paul Nebel: ““It was a fantastic first half, both defensively and offensively. Bayern then brought on players with unbelievable quality. We also stopped playing as bravely as we had before the break. There are a few situations we need to look at again, especially on Olise’s side. We didn’t do enough to close him down and double up on him. It’s a shame we couldn’t put the game to bed today, but we’ll look to make up for that next week against FC St. Pauli.”
