Centre-back Konstantin Schopp joins Mainz 05

Austria U21 international arrives from SK Sturm Graz

1. FSV Mainz 05 have signed Austria youth international Konstantin Schopp from SK Sturm Graz. The 1.95m tall centre-back has agreed a four-year contract with Mainz, keeping him at the club until 2029.

Schopp, the son of former Austria international and Bundesliga player Markus Schopp, has had an exciting year in football. The 19-year-old reached the round of 16 of the UEFA Youth League with Sturm Graz’s U19s, established himself as a regular starter for the club’s second team (25 appearances in Austria’s 2. Liga, 42 in total), and made his debuts in the Austrian Bundesliga, the Champions League, and for Austria’s U21 national team. Following the signing of his contract, Schopp now joins up again with his country’s U21 squad, having been called up for their upcoming friendlies against Latvia (6th June) and Hungary (10th June).

“Konstantin Schopp is a highly talented central defender who possesses both the physical and technical attributes needed to succeed in the Bundesliga,” said sporting director Niko Bungert. “We want to support and nurture him on this path while giving him the time he needs to continue developing. His potential has already caught the attention of a number of clubs, so we’re delighted that he’s chosen to take his next career step with Mainz 05.”

“I’m really excited about the opportunity I’ve been given here in Mainz. I had very good conversations with the management and they clearly laid out a plan for how I can continue to develop. This club is known for helping young players grow and many Austrians have taken important steps here, so it was an easy decision for me. I had a good feeling from the very beginning. I’m really looking forward to the new season and to getting to know the club, the fans, and the amazing atmosphere at the MEWA ARENA.”
