Jonny Burkardt moves to Eintracht Frankfurt

Academy product and Germany international leaves FSV after 11 years

FSV's number 29 captained the team last season and impressed as both a goalscorer and a leader.

Mainz 05’s academy product and all-time leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga has left to join Eintracht Frankfurt. The clubs have agreed that the transfer details will remain undisclosed.

The 24-year-old made his Bundesliga debut in autumn 2018 and played a total of 144 competitive games for the 05ers, scoring 45 goals and recording 15 assists. His goals played a big part in FSV avoiding relegation in 2023/24 and then qualifying for the UEFA Conference League in 2024/25. During his 11-year spell at the club, the Darmstadt-born striker captained Germany U21s to the European Championship title in 2021 and broke into the senior side in 2024. Burkardt was also captain of the 05ers in the Bundesliga last season.

“There’s no doubt about the fact that Jonny Burkardt has been a special player for Mainz 05 over the past few years. With his goalscoring ability, stamina, and aggressive pressing, as well as his down-to-earth, honest and friendly nature, he’s embodied many of the virtues of Mainz 05 like few others, leading him to become a role model for a number of young fans. His rise from a youngster in our academy to an established Bundesliga player and Germany international provides inspiration and motivation to our youth players. Jonny has always been a true team player, both on and off the pitch. How much Mainz 05 means to him was also evident when, in the winter of 23/24, he decided against leaving on a free transfer and extended his contract here, even when the club was in a precarious position in the league. Without his excellent performances in the second half of that season after a long period on the sidelines due to injury, Mainz 05 would have been relegated. We haven’t forgotten that. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for his passionate, tireless commitment to Mainz 05 and for many wonderful moments in our recent club history, in which he played a key role. We wish Jonny all the best for the future. We will always be connected to him. Mainz 05 says thank you and goodbye, Jonny,” commented Christian Heidel, board member for sport and communication at 1. FSV Mainz 05.

Exactly two months ago, on 4th May, Jonny secured FSV an important point in the race for Europe against Frankfurt.
