Amiri starts for Germany in Klopp debut, Mwene scores for Austria

For a long time, it looked like the perfect debut, but deep into stoppage time, the Germany national team conceded an equaliser in their first international under head coach Jürgen Klopp. After 96 hard-fought minutes, Germany drew 1-1 with the Netherlands. Nadiem Amiri started the match, lining up in midfield alongside captain Joshua Kimmich and Felix Nmecha. He owed his place in the starting XI partly to a late change: Jamal Musiala was injured during the warm-up, and the Bayern player has since left the Germany camp.

Phillipp Mwene enjoyed a more successful start to the Nations League group stage. With his headed goal shortly before the end, the full-back set Austria on course for victory against Israel. Defensive teammate Stefan Posch was also involved in the 3-1 win. Kaishu Sano and Jae-sung Lee had already been in action early in the morning German time, both starting their respective friendlies.

• On Klopp’s debut, Amiri produced a solid performance, setting up the best chance to make it 2-0 with an excellent pass (38’) and also showing the necessary bite in one or two situations. The Mainz 05 playmaker was on the pitch for just under 80 minutes before being replaced in the closing stages by debutant Yannik Engelhardt (SCF).

• Mwene and Posch started in head coach Ralf Rangnick’s back four and played the full 90 minutes. With the score at 1-1, the ÖFB side spent a long time trying to break down the Israeli defence. Shortly before the end of normal time, Mwene was perfectly placed and headed home to become the match-winner.

• In the 3-1 friendly win against Uruguay, Kaishu Sano started alongside his brother Kodai Sano. The Mainz 05 midfield engine’s evening came to an end after 77 minutes.

• Jae-sung Lee also made a successful start to the friendly phase with the South Korean national team. In the 3-0 win against Ecuador, the attacking player played the full match.
