A Bayern Side Under Pressure: A Closer Look at the Record Champions

Injury Concerns Overshadow Bayern's Near-Perfect Start to the Season, but the Bavarians Made a Major Statement on the European Stage in Midweek

Bayern Munich have endured a turbulent few weeks, with much of the attention focused on the man normally in charge on the touchline. Vincent Kompany collapsed following a training session at the club's facilities almost two weeks ago and was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with meningeal irritation. The 40-year-old Belgian has since been discharged, although it remains unclear when he will return to the dugout. Assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge in the meantime. On the pitch, however, Bayern have continued to look largely dominant. The Bavarians are unbeaten in their last 23 Bundesliga matches and have yet to taste defeat in either cup competition this season, despite a demanding fixture schedule in the opening months of the campaign. Saturday's clash at the MEWA ARENA (3:30 PM CET, live on Sky, DAZN and 05ER.fm) will mark the final hurdle in a gruelling run of six consecutive weeks with midweek fixtures for the record champions.

The Coaches

Winning has always been part of Vincent Kompany's DNA. As a young player at RSC Anderlecht, he won two league titles in four years before moving to Hamburg and eventually Manchester City, where he captained the club to numerous trophies, including under Pep Guardiola. He returned to Anderlecht towards the end of his playing career, making a seamless transition into coaching. After three seasons at his boyhood club, Kompany took charge of Burnley ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. He guided the Clarets to a convincing promotion to the Premier League in his first season, although they were relegated the following year. Nevertheless, Bayern saw potential in the then 38-year-old and placed their trust in him following a trophyless campaign under Thomas Tuchel. With his aggressive pressing and attractive style of football, Kompany brought the Bundesliga title back to Munich before guiding Bayern to a domestic double last season.

His stand-in, Aaron Danks, began his coaching career in youth football. The 43-year-old took his first steps in senior coaching alongside Kompany in Belgium before moving on to Aston Villa and Middlesbrough. He eventually joined the Belgian in Munich in the summer of 2024. The Englishman is no stranger to the role of interim head coach, having stepped in for two matches at Aston Villa in October 2022. He also took charge of Bayern during their dramatic 5-4 defeat away to Paris in the first leg of last season's European encounter.

The Squad

Bayern Munich opted against making their usual marquee signing this summer, instead focusing on making the squad younger and more streamlined. Nevertheless, the Bavarians still spent sums on high-quality additions that most other clubs could only dream of, bringing in Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari for €50 million each. At the same time, Bayern parted ways with Joao Palhinha, Leon Goretzka, Raphael Guerreiro and Alexander Nübel. Young prospects such as Noel Aseko, Jonah Kusi-Asare and Maurice Krattenmacher also left the record champions, although Bayern retained buy-back options for two of the three talents.

Despite having a relatively small squad, a closer look at the individual positions highlights the wealth of quality at Bayern's disposal. In goal, they can choose between Manuel Neuer and highly rated youngster Jonas Urbig. Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Kim Min-jae are currently competing for the two centre-back positions. At full-back, Josip Stanisic is joined by versatile players such as Konrad Laimer, Tom Bischof, Alphonso Davies and Brown, all of whom are also comfortable playing in midfield. Brown even featured as an attacking midfielder on his debut in the Supercup. If needed, they can also provide cover for the central midfield pairing of Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic.

A new generation of talent is emerging in attacking midfield, with Jamal Musiala and Lennart Karl already performing at the highest level despite their young age. Further forward, Bayern's formidable attacking trio, the "Big Three", are responsible for delivering the goals, led by Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane. The England striker, who claimed this year's prestigious award, not only excels in front of goal but also regularly drops deep to create chances for his teammates. Michael Olise and the currently injured Luis Diaz complete the trio, who combined for an impressive 112 Bundesliga goal contributions last season.

The Start to the Season

Bayern Munich are sitting at the top of the Bundesliga table as usual and have already delivered several statement performances. A 5-1 opening-day victory over VfB Stuttgart, a 7-0 thrashing of Union Berlin and a dominant 6-1 win against direct rivals RB Leipzig have all shown just how unstoppable Bayern can be on their day. However, they have also had games where they struggled and dropped points, including a goalless draw away to Schalke and a 2-2 draw in Augsburg.

Last weekend, Bayern hosted Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker, but it proved to be a costly evening for the Bavarians. Fabio Silva struck a late equaliser for Dortmund, although Bayern's injury setbacks were an even bigger concern. Both Saibari and Serge Gnabry were forced off in the first half and are now expected to be sidelined for several months. Olise also left the pitch with an injury towards the end of the match, although he could make a quicker return. With Musiala and Diaz already unavailable, Bayern's injury list continues to grow, leaving the record champions increasingly short of attacking options.

Despite their mounting injury concerns, Bayern showed little sign of slowing down. A 2-0 away victory over Atlético Madrid extended their unbeaten run to 15 competitive matches this season. A look at the starting line-up highlighted the versatility of Bayern's squad: Davies started on the left wing, Bischof partnered Kimmich in central midfield, Brown replaced Karl in the number ten role, while Laimer once again occupied his usual position at right-back. The Austrian also found the net for the second consecutive match, scoring the goal that sealed the victory.

The Last Meeting

The two sides played out a memorable encounter at the MEWA ARENA on Matchday 31 last season. Mainz produced a phenomenal first-half performance and were ruthless in front of goal, with Dominik Kohr, Paul Nebel and Sheraldo Becker firing the 05ER into a 3-0 lead at the break, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. A fifth home win of the season and confirmation of Bundesliga survival looked firmly within reach. However, the game took a dramatic turn in the second half as Bayern fought back to level the scores through Nicolas Jackson, Olise and Musiala. Kane then completed the remarkable comeback, scoring the winner with just seven minutes remaining.
