"No Grip on the Game, No Fight"

Reaction to a "Dreadful Performance" in Elversberg

Even the 1,500 tireless travelling Mainz supporters in the away end struggled to make sense of their team's inexplicable performance.

SVE – FSV 4:1 (3:0)

Niko Bungert: "Over the past three days, both in Bochum and again today, we've played with a complete lack of confidence. Whether in or out of possession, nothing seems to come naturally to us anymore, almost as if something has switched off in our heads. I can't really explain it at the moment. We need to find a way to turn things around quickly. We simply weren't ourselves, which suggests the problem is clearly a mental one. It was painful to see the entire team in that state. In such a short space of time, a real sense of uncertainty has crept into the squad. We know we're capable of much better, but after today's game, we're honestly pretty much lost for words."

Urs Fischer (speaking to Sky): "I'm a bit lost for words. You have to be careful not to say the wrong thing and give yourself a night to reflect. Once again, we made things far too easy for the opposition. We're giving away cheap goals, and the same patterns keep repeating themselves. It seems to be a mental issue. After the break, we showed a side of ourselves that was at least acceptable, but the first half simply wasn't good enough. Now it's about picking ourselves back up. We can't change what's happened. We'll try to do better against Bayern."

Silvan nach der Niederlage in Elversberg

Silvan Widmer: "It was an absolutely dreadful first half. We couldn't get a grip on the game and showed no fight. We deserved to lose by that margin because the opposition completely outplayed and outfought us. After Tuesday's disappointing performance, we were determined to put things right, but today we've hit rock bottom. The team looked fresh before kick-off, but then we fell behind again and suddenly looked short of confidence. There's no sugar-coating it."
