Two Unwanted Streaks, One Goal: A Home Win
Facts and Figures Ahead of the Home Clash with Werder Bremen

When the two sides last met, both were still firmly embroiled in the relegation battle. Now, following promising starts to the season, both Mainz and Werder Bremen find themselves in the top half of the Bundesliga table and will be hoping to steer clear of another relegation fight. Both teams will be looking to build on their positive momentum when they meet on Saturday (3:30 PM CEST, MEWA ARENA, live on Sky, DAZN and 05ER.fm).
Facts and Figures Ahead of #M05SVW
Mainz's Attack Finding Its Rhythm
Mainz's attacking players have played a major role in the team's excellent start to the season. With 14 goals, the 05ER boast the sixth-best attack in the Bundesliga and have almost tripled their goal tally compared to the same stage last season.
Fond Memories of Bremen
Mainz can take confidence from the most recent meeting between the two sides, having secured a 2-0 victory at the Weserstadion in March. Their biggest-ever win against Werder also came in Bremen, when they cruised to a 5-0 victory on 17 December 2019. However, the overall head-to-head record favours the visitors, with Mainz recording twelve wins, eight draws and 18 defeats in 38 Bundesliga meetings.
Werder's Strong Record in Mainz
The 05ER are winless in their last five home games against Werder Bremen (two draws, three defeats), with their most recent victory coming on 20 June 2020. In fact, Mainz have a worse home record against Werder than against any other current Bundesliga side, having won just four of their 19 meetings. Conversely, Werder are currently enjoying their longest unbeaten away run against any Bundesliga opponent at Mainz. It's about time that changed, especially with the 05ER eager to end their home winless streak. Their last victory at the MEWA ARENA came against Eintracht Frankfurt in March.
Werder's Comeback Kings
Werder Bremen have become the first team in Bundesliga history to pick up points in three consecutive matches after falling 0-2 behind. They fought back to beat FC Augsburg 3-2 before drawing 2-2 away to Borussia Dortmund and 2-2 against Paderborn last weekend. Daniel Thioune's side have already collected eight points from losing positions this season, more than any other team in the Bundesliga.
Strong Finishers
Both teams tend to come alive in the closing stages of matches. Mainz and Werder have each scored six goals in the final 15 minutes, the joint-highest tally in the Bundesliga. Werder have been particularly strong in the second half, with eleven of their 13 league goals this season coming after the break.
Battle of the Number Nines
Niclas Füllkrug has made an impressive return to Werder Bremen. The 33-year-old striker currently sits joint-top of the Bundesliga scoring charts alongside Leverkusen's Patrik Schick, with six goals each. Just behind them is Phillip Tietz with five goals. The 29-year-old has scored in each of his last five Bundesliga away matches, extending that run to six consecutive away games across all competitions when including the DFB-Pokal. However, he has found the net just once in front of the home fans this season.
Set-Piece Threat
Werder have already scored five goals from set pieces this season, more than any other Bundesliga side. That accounts for 38 percent of their total league goals. However, Mainz's defence has an impressive record of its own, having yet to concede a single goal from a set piece this season.
Match Officials
Florian Badstübner will referee the match, assisted by Markus Schüller and Philipp Hüwe on the touchlines. Felix Prigan will serve as the fourth official, while Nicolas Winter and Felix-Benjamin Schwermer will oversee VAR duties.
