Switzerland can keep dreaming after their penalty shootout win over Colombia

Silvan Widmer’s World Cup journey continues! Switzerland, the only nation with Mainz involvement still in the tournament, have booked their place in the quarter-finals. On Tuesday evening German time, the “Nati” beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties in the round of 16 in Vancouver after a goalless 120 minutes, reaching the last eight of a World Cup for the first time since 1954. The Mainz 05 captain came on in the 87th minute and went on to play the whole of extra time.

Quarter-final against Argentina

Switzerland now face a major test: overnight from Saturday into Sunday (12 July, 03:00 CEST, live on MagentaTV), they will take on reigning world champions Argentina in Kansas City. Should they reach the semi-finals, Widmer and Switzerland would face either Norway or England.
