Mainz fail to find a way past spirited newly promoted Paderborn
Despite dominating large spells of their Bundesliga opener against newly promoted SC Paderborn, 1. FSV Mainz 05 had to settle for a goalless draw at the sold-out MEWA ARENA on Saturday afternoon. While the visitors, who were set up defensively particularly after the break, failed to produce a single shot on the Mainz goal over the 90 minutes, FSV were denied once by the woodwork, through Tietz in the first half, and were repeatedly frustrated by SCP goalkeeper Nahuel Noll after the restart. Shortly after the second half began, Tobias Stieler’s whistle also surprisingly stayed silent after Nadiem Amiri had gone down in the penalty area following a clear shirt pull. It was ultimately a contentious moment, although Mainz did not want to blame the result on it afterwards. “We had enough chances before and after that,” Tietz explained to Sky, among others, after the final whistle.
FSV continue next Sunday (15:30) away to HSV, before Eintracht Frankfurt visit the MEWA ARENA six days later (12 September, 15:30) for the Rhine-Main derby.
