Nelson Weiper returns to squad

Nelson Weiper has been named in the squad for the home match against 1. FC Köln. Mainz 05 are in advanced talks with the academy product over extending his contract, which currently runs until summer 2026. Because of the ongoing discussions around his future, the 20-year-old was not included in the squad for the first two competitive fixtures of the season.

Board member for sport Christian Heidel commented: “In the past few days we’ve held very open talks with Nelly and his management, and we’ve agreed on a way forward which will soon be finalised in a new contract. Nelly, a born-and-bred Mainzer, has been at the club for 13 years and there has never been any doubt about his deep bond with Mainz 05. Nelly is and will remain a 05er – and we’re very happy about that.”
