05ers’ reactions to the win in the Rhine-Main derby

Paul Nebel was the match winner against Eintracht Frankfurt.

MAINZ 05 2-1 EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

Niko Bungert: “It was an unusual game. I’m delighted that we have had such a perfect week. We’ve been under a lot of pressure recently and today was no different. You can’t make amends for dropped points over the international break, so we were determined to take all three today. The team’s discipline over 90 minutes, considering the amount of games we’ve played, is impressive. The boys are physically capable, but they’ve handled the mental workload so well. They were only focused on winning. Paul has been on top form since coming in for Nadiem, which is impressive. He’s important for us, and we’re glad he delivered these two key moments.”

Paul Nebel: “I took a gamble on that second goal. Of course I’m happy, but I would’ve been just as happy for Nelly. A goal like that is pure adrenaline and an amazing feeling. I’m pleased with my development and I’m back performing week after week again. I’m back and happy, so really, we don’t need to talk about it after every game anymore.”

Silvan Widmer: “We finally had a late goal go our way. We didn’t give them much at all and were dangerous ourselves. Frankfurt had more possession, but often in areas where it didn’t hurt us. That meant our game plan worked perfectly. It’s been an incredible week that went exactly as we had hoped. Now we’ve got a short break, but we’ll take this momentum with us. Everyone is pushing themselves to the limit and knows what needs to be done. These three points are hugely important for staying up.”
