Urs Fischer appointed as new Mainz 05 head coach
Contract valid until 2028 - "Convinced that we’ll be able to turn things around together as a team"

1. FSV Mainz 05 have appointed Urs Fischer as their new head coach. The Swiss tactician has signed a contract running until summer 2028. Fischer will begin preparations immediately for the team’s upcoming UEFA Conference League fixture away to Lech Poznan (Thursday, 21:00 CET). Joining him at the WOLFGANG FRANK CAMPUS will be long-time assistant coach Markus Hoffmann (53) and video analyst Sebastian Podsiadly (34).
The 59-year-old began his coaching career at his hometown club FC Zürich. Following successful spells at FC Thun (2013 to 2015), where he guided the club to the Europa League for the first time in their history, and at FC Basel (2015 to 2017), winning both the league title (twice) and domestic cup, Fischer took charge of 1. FC Union Berlin in 2018. With Union, he secured promotion to the Bundesliga and subsequently led the club to the Conference League, Europa League and Champions League in successive seasons. Fischer was named Coach of the Year in 2023 and has been without a club since leaving Union in November of that year.

Board member for sport Christian Heidel commented: “Urs Fischer has proven at every stage of his coaching career that he can organise and develop teams, while also winning over dressing rooms with his calm yet empathetic approach. His achievements and attributes have made him one of the most sought-after coaches around. We’re therefore delighted that he was immediately interested about the opportunity to join Mainz 05 and didn’t hesitate in committing to this shared path.”
“There are no easy jobs in football – and that’s exactly what makes them so interesting. I had very good discussions with Christian Heidel and Niko Bungert, and I feel Mainz 05 is the right club for me. The club’s values off the pitch, the determination to never give up and constantly press the opposition, and the passion of the fans at the MEWA ARENA – I’m really looking forward to this challenge and I’m convinced that we’ll be able to turn things around together as a team,” commented Fischer.
Press conference on Monday
Mainz 05 will officially introduce their new head coach at a press conference on Monday afternoon. It will take place at 16:30 CET in the press conference room of the MEWA ARENA.
