Match reaction 03.05.2026 - 20:28 Uhr

“We never let our heads drop and never give up”

Philipp Tietz scored his fourth Bundesliga goal for FSV in Hamburg.

Niko Bungert: “We’re delighted to have secured safety with two matchdays to spare, after what was a turbulent season with both ups and downs. A massive compliment to everyone who played a part in achieving this. Given where we were in October, November or December last year, this wouldn’t have been possible without a lot of hard work. Urs brought in fresh energy and revitalised the team. Despite some tough times, everyone always continued to believe. That’s what defines us at Mainz 05: we never let our heads drop and never give up. After all, there’s 34 matchdays in a season. A huge weight lifted off our shoulders today. It was a very mature performance and a fully-deserved victory.”

Philipp Tietz: "Mainz 05 have a fantastic team, fantastic fans and a fantastic coaching staff, and so it was only a matter of time for me until we would be successful together. We’ve managed to secure safety now, which is fully deserved. In doing so, we were able to give something back to the fans and they should make sure to celebrate accordingly today. I’m up for anything today.”

Nadiem Amiri: “We were the better team over the 90 minutes. It got a little nervy towards the end, but based on the quality of our chances, it could have easily finished 4-0 or 5-0. What matters is that we managed to secure safety with a very mature performance. We managed to strike at just the right times. In January everyone was saying that we wouldn’t be able to do it. We then brought in some good players, while others discovered their form, and our hard work ensured that this quality became visible. I’m grateful to have been part of it.”
