Can High-Intensity Football Keep Elversberg Up? A Closer Look at SV Elversberg

After Two DFB-Pokal Encounters, the Two Sides Are Set to Meet in the League for the First Time

It was 4 March 2022 when SV Elversberg secured a 2-0 victory over Mainz's U23 side at the Bruchwegstadion, before going on to earn promotion to the third division at the end of the season. Four years later, SVE have fought their way up to the Bundesliga, earning the chance to face Mainz's first team. Behind this remarkable success story lie smart decisions in recruitment and staffing, as well as an unwavering belief in the club's playing philosophy. We take a closer look at the newly promoted side from Saarland ahead of Mainz's first Friday evening fixture of the season (8:30 PM CET, live on Sky and 05ER.fm) at the Stadion an der Kaiserlinde.

The Head Coach

Much like his current club, Vincent Wagner has enjoyed a remarkable rise through the ranks. The Nordhausen-born coach took charge of TSG Hoffenheim's reserve team ahead of the 2022/23 season and guided them to the third tier of German football within three years. Around the same time, SV Elversberg, under the guidance of Horst Steffen, climbed from the fourth tier to the second division before narrowly missing out on Bundesliga promotion in their second season following a dramatic relegation play-off defeat to 1. FC Heidenheim.

Steffen left for Werder Bremen at the start of the 2025/26 season, leaving Wagner with big shoes to fill. However, he rose to the challenge and guided Elversberg to the Bundesliga in his debut campaign. Now competing in Germany's top flight, the 40-year-old remains committed to his playing philosophy: high, aggressive pressing combined with quick transitions and a defensive line that constantly looks to push forward. Wagner describes his tactical approach as "power football". "Our aim is to stay in the Bundesliga by playing proactive football. We'll most likely reach our limits in certain situations, but I still believe this is the only way forward. It's always been my philosophy, and I'm not going to change it," the head coach explained ahead of the season.

The Squad

Unlike most newly promoted sides, Elversberg have not undergone a major squad overhaul. Wagner has managed to keep the core of his team intact, particularly in defence. Nicolas Kristof remains the first-choice goalkeeper. The 26-year-old has been part of the club's remarkable rise from the fourth tier to the Bundesliga, alongside striker Luca Schnellbacher. Captain and defensive leader Lukas Pinckert is another long-serving player, having joined the Saarland club in the 2022/23 season. He is joined in central defence by Maximilian Rohr, while Lasse Günther, Jan Gyamerah and new signing Luca Sirch provide options in the full-back positions. There is also a new face in defensive midfield, with Lukasz Poreba arriving from HSV to form a protective shield in front of the backline alongside Felix Keidel.

Elversberg have strengthened considerably in attack, bringing in a new generation of young talent. Leading the way is marquee signing Cole Campbell, with the 20-year-old joining on a permanent deal for a fee of €6 million ahead of the season. Former Bayern Munich prospect Maurice Krattenmacher also arrived for around €2 million, while Francis Onyeka, Noah Darvich and Noel Futkeu joined on loan. David Mokwa, Lukas Petkov and Tom Zimmerschied bring a little more experience to the attacking unit and continue to enjoy the head coach's full confidence. Mokwa, in particular, has a long-standing connection with Wagner, having already played under the 40-year-old at Hoffenheim. He has since established himself as a regular starter at Elversberg.

The Start to the Season

Elversberg made a spectacular start to their debut Bundesliga campaign, beating Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-2 in front of their home fans on the opening matchday. A week later, Wagner's side overturned a 3-1 deficit in the space of 30 minutes at Borussia-Park to claim a thrilling 4-3 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach. They also put up a strong fight against Bayern Munich, narrowly losing 2-1 to the record champions. However, their momentum slowed somewhat after the international break, with a goalless draw away to Schalke followed by a narrow 1-0 defeat at Union Berlin's Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

The newly promoted side rediscovered their attacking flair against FC Augsburg, once again showcasing Wagner's high-intensity style of football. After a thrilling end-to-end encounter, Elversberg secured their third win of the season with a 4-3 victory over Augsburg, briefly climbing to sixth place in the Bundesliga table. However, a heavy 4-0 defeat away to a strong RB Leipzig side last weekend means SVE head into this matchday sitting eighth in the standings.

Elversberg's DFB-Pokal campaign also came to an end in the second round, with Wagner's side suffering the same fate as Mainz: elimination at the hands of second-division opposition. SVE fell to a 2-0 home defeat against SV Darmstadt 98.

The Last Meeting

Aside from their encounters in the Oberliga during the 1980s, the two sides have met twice in the DFB-Pokal, with Mainz coming out on top on both occasions. Their most recent meeting took place three years ago, when Ludovic Ajorque scored the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 away victory in the first round of the competition.

Elversberg have faced Mainz's U23 side far more frequently, with the teams meeting 23 times across various Regionalliga divisions. The head-to-head record favours the Saarland club, who have recorded ten wins, seven draws and six defeats. However, that record is unlikely to change anytime soon.
