Bungert: Willpower and mentality were decisive

Niko Bungert: “We had a lot under control in the first half and reacted well to conceding. That gave us the feeling that we were well in the game. The first penalty changed things a little. After that, our play wasn’t marked by confidence, and Gladbach deservedly equalised. Then, little by little, we got a foothold in the game again. I’m very happy for Eric, who had only been able to watch for so long. In the end, it got heated again, and the penalty decisions were frustrating. Our will and mentality were the key today in repeatedly finding our way back into the game. After four matches, it is a good start, and that feels really good, especially before the long international break.”

Phillip Tietz: “At the moment, I’m very happy with my return, but today the joy about the win outweighs everything else. Especially after last week and the way the game unfolded. It was important to show a different side, and we knew we had to work for 90 minutes. It certainly wasn’t a great game, but we fought and showed character.”

Eric Martel: “Of course, it’s a great way to come back in after the injury, a bit like you would dream it. I’m happy that we were able to win the game. I wanted to make an impact, and I managed to do that. The fact that it got tight again at the end was certainly unnecessary.”
