Bo Svensson no longer head coach – Jan Siewert appointed as first-team coach

U23 head coach to step up – Svensson: “It’s a really difficult goodbye, but I feel that the time has come”

Bo Svensson is no longer head coach of Mainz 05. The 44-year-old made that decision after a long meeting with sporting chairman Christian Heidel and sporting director Martin Schmidt on Thursday. U23 head coach Jan Siewert will take over as first-team coach, starting with this Saturday’s home fixture against RB Leipzig.

Former first-team player and youth coach Svensson took charge of the team in January 2021 and turned the team’s fortunes around, sensationally steering them to safety in 2021/21. He coached FSV to eighth and ninth in the last two seasons, but the side are still waiting for their first Bundesliga victory of this campaign.

Sporting chairman Christian Heidel on Bo Svensson’s departure:

“Mainz would like to thank Bo very much, particularly for keeping the club up in his first season. Since then, we’ve had two brilliant seasons and inspired our fans with our football. We’ve had a lot of discussions in the past few weeks, however, about how we can turn our poor form around. Unfortunately, there are always many sides to the story in football, which can bring a successful collaboration to a point whereby it is perhaps better to go a different way. Bo also felt the same and told us about this. Hats off to him for his openness and his close bond with Mainz 05. We’ve always had a special and trustworthy relationship with him. I’d like to thank him on behalf of everyone for his work. It was an extraordinary period. We wish him all the best for the future, and he’ll forever be a Zerofiver.”

Bo Svensson:

“It’s a really difficult goodbye, but I feel that the time has come. I’ve been a Zerofiver for 16 years. I’ve learnt an incredible amount, got to know so many amazing people, in the team, the fans, in the city, my kids have grown up here. The experiences I’ve had here will shape me for life. Unfortunately, due to the way things are going on the pitch, the time has come for nobody to be seen as above the club. It’s time to pool all the forces together to try and improve the situation. Unfortunately, I won’t be a part of that, but that’s just the way it is. More than ever before, the club and the team need that togetherness that made us who we are.”

Schon Im Januar 2021 coachte Jan Siewert die 05-Profis im Auswärtsspiel beim FC Bayern München.

Jan Siewert joined the Mainz academy as youth-team head coach in the summer of 2020, and was appointed as U23s head coach in summer 2022. Siewert has plenty of experience being a head coach. He’s been in charge of Huddersfield Town in both the Premier League and the Championship, and had other spells at Rot-Weiß Essen, Borussia Dortmund U23s and VfL Bochum U19s. He was also appointed interim first-team coach in the 2020/21 season for one match before Bo Svensson took over.
