Mainz 05 part ways with Bo Henriksen

U23 coach Benjamin Hoffmann takes charge on an interim basis

Bo Henriksen is no longer the head coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05. The club’s sporting management and the Danish coach agreed on Wednesday to end their collaboration with immediate effect. Henriksen had taken over the team in February 2024 while they were in the relegation zone and led a remarkable fightback to secure survival. Last season, the 50-year-old guided Mainz to sixth place in the Bundesliga and into the UEFA Conference League. This season, however, the 05ers sit bottom of the table with just one win from twelve league matches.

Board member for sport and communication Christian Heidel commented: “Mainz 05 owes Bo Henriksen an enormous amount. In what was almost a hopeless situation, he shook the club and the whole city awake and, with his empathy and passion, led us to survival and a year later even into the Conference League. But football always brings moments when, for sporting reasons, a fresh start becomes necessary – even when everyone involved has worked together with full commitment right to the end. Together with Bo, we reached the conclusion that we had arrived at such a point, even if this separation really hurts. Bo is a fantastic coach and a fantastic person. We wish him all the very best. His place in our hearts and in our history books is assured, and he will always be warmly welcomed here.”

“I am truly grateful for all the experiences and for our time together”

Bo Henriksen himself said: “Mainz 05 is a wonderful club with wonderful people and wonderful fans. We achieved so much together, and I am truly grateful for all the experiences and for our time together. Thank you for the incredible support! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to play the same successful football this season, even though we fought for it right to the end. That’s football sometimes. I wish the club and the team all the very best and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the next matches and for a successful season.”

U23 coach Benjamin Hoffmann will take charge of first-team training on an interim basis until a new head coach is appointed.

Benjamin Hoffmann's U23 side currently sit third in the Regionalliga Südwest
