Gruda sets Germany U21s on their way to victory

Here’s how the international break went for the 05ers’ six internationals

Brajan Gruda put Germany U21s 1-0 up against Israel

Six Mainz players were away with their national teams over the last few days during the international break. They are all returning to Mainz today to prepare for the away game at RB Leipzig on Saturday (15:30 CET).

Gruda and Lee score opening goals

Brajan Gruda was involved in two European qualifiers with the Germany U21 national team and scored his first goal for Germany U21s as well as making two appearances in the starting eleven. First, Antonio Di Salvo’s side drew 0-0 with Kosovo in Chemnitz. Gruda then put his side in front after just under a quarter of an hour against Israel when Gladbach’s Rocco Reitz picked out his well-positioned teammate from the left flank, with Gruda slotting home from 12 yards. The U21s went top of Group D with a 2-0 win.

Jae-sung Lee was also on the scoresheet for South Korea as he started in two World Cup qualifiers against Thailand. The two sides drew 1-1 in the first meeting, whilst Mainz’s number 7 put his team 1-0 up after 19 minutes in the second game as South Korea registered a 3-0 win.

Jae-sung Lee scored the opening goal for the South Korea national team in their game against Thailand (Korea Football Team).

Barreiro misses out on qualification for EURO 2024, Mwene registers two wins with Austria

Leandro Barreiro missed out on qualification for the 2024 European Championships in Germany with the Luxembourg national team. They suffered a 2-0 defeat against Georgia in the play-offs, ending their hopes of qualification for the tournament. Luxembourg secured a meaningless 2-1 win in the subsequent game against Kazakhstan, with Barreiro starting both games for his country.

Phillipp Mwene was also in action for the Austria national team and he started both friendlies against Slovakia and Turkey. Austria put in two commanding performances as they ran out 2-0 and 6-1 winners in these two games respectively.

Silvan Widmer started both games for the Switzerland national team as they contested two friendlies. Following a goalless draw against Denmark, Switzerland registered a 1-0 win against the Republic of Ireland.

Andreas Hanche-Olsen suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Czech Republic with Norway. His side then drew 1-1 against Slovakia in their second game as Hanche-Olsen was an unused substitute.
