Zerofivers beat SV Gonsenheim 8-0 in friendly
Mainz prevailed over Oberliga opposition with an impressive eight goals
Mainz played out their third friendly of pre-season today, beating Oberliga side SV Gonsenheim 8-0. The hosts managed to hold off the Bundesliga side for 18 minutes, with some impressive saves from their keeper Paul Simon, however Cyrill Akono eventually broke the deadlock in favour of the Zerofivers.
The Oberliga side then had a stroke of bad luck as an attempted clearance turned into an own-goal and doubled Mainz’s lead (33’). Alexander Hack then added another goal after a corner to give Mainz a three-goal advantage (36’). Gonsenheim then had a good opportunity through Halil Ibrahim Yilmaz to get one back, but the effort hit the woodwork, saving Mainz’s clean sheet which stayed intact for the entire game.
The second half meant fresh faces for Sandro schwarz’s side. Jean-Paul Boëtius got the first goal of the second half, when his effort left the opposition keeper with no chance (55’) followed by a quick goal from Jonny Burkardt minutes later (57’). Kölle then got one of his own to make it 7-0 and Boëtius added one more to give the game its final score of 8-0.
Coach Sandro Schwarz: “We started with a really good attack and had phases where we played to slowly and weren’t precise enough. 29 goals in the first three games of pre-season is a pretty good boost for the attacking aspect of our game. But we can of course improve on that.”
