Working on competitive mentality

The Zerofivers began intensive training ahead of the game in Düsseldorf – Onisiwo & Burkardt are back in team training.

On Tuesday, the Zerofivers’ second and final public training session signalled the start of a new week of competitive football. On Saturday afternoon, two weeks after the away victory over SC Paderborn, Mainz 05 are on the road again as they look to make it back-to-back wins either side of the international break. Picking up the three points is vital if Mainz are to keep up with the midtable pack. The session at Bruchweg lasted around 80 minutes, and Karim Onisiwo and Jonathan Burkardt trained for the first time since returning from international duty.

Sandro Schwarz and his coaching team have seamlessly blended last week’s training regime into this week’s sessions. The team trained on both small and large pitches, which allowed for thrilling challenges and quick decision-making in tight spaces, and also meant for many shots on goals and lots of converted goalmouth opportunities. At the beginning of the week, there was a real focus on competitive spirit and the mentality that the Zerofivers hope to bring to the match against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Preparations for match day 8 continue with a gym session on Tuesday afternoon. Training sessions for the remainder of the week will take place behind closed doors, after all of Mainz’ international players have returned.
