Widmer stunner against European Champions
Eight Mainz players away with their countries – Widmer and Nebel both on the scoresheet
Eight 1. FSV Mainz 05 players have been away with their respective nations during the international break. Two Zerofivers were on the scoresheet, and one player celebrated a landmark appearance with an assist.
Jae-Sung Lee and South Korea defeated UAE 1-0 last Thursday in a World Cup qualifier, with our man playing the full game. He will return to Mainz after Tuesday evening’s qualifier against Iraq.
Ádám Szalai had two reasons to be happy on international duty with Hungary. The striker won his 75th cap in the 4-0 win over San Marino, playing the full 90 minutes and contributing an assist too. Their final World Cup qualifier is tonight against Poland.
Luxembourg and Leandro Barreiro have already played their two qualifiers in November, defeating Azerbaijan 3-1 on Thursday and losing 3-0 to the Republic of Ireland on Sunday night. The Mainz man played the full game on both occasions.
Widmer scores again
Right-back Silvan Widmer has continued his stellar form whilst on international duty. Just one week after scoring a glorious curler against Mönchenglabach, the 28-year-old unleashed an absolute rocket to open the scoring in a World Cup qualifier against European Champions Italy alongside his Swiss national teammate and former Zerofiver Fabian Frei. The match ended 1-1, and Switzerland’s next fixture is against Bulgaria on Monday (15th November) before Widmer travels back to Mainz.
Karim Onisiwo did not feature as Austria defeated Israel 4-2 in their World Cup qualifier, but he has another opportunity to represent his country when Austria play Moldova this evening.
Centre-back David Nemeth is on international duty with the Austria U21s. The 20-year-old played the full 90 minutes as they bear Azerbaijan 3-0 in an U21 EURO qualifier. They next play Croatia U21s on Tuesday (16th November) before Nemeth himself will come back to Mainz.
Burkhardt & Nebel currently with the Germany national youth teams
Jonny Burkhardt suffered a 4-0 defeat to Poland with the Germany U21s in U21 European Championship qualifying on Friday. Burkhardt captained the side and played the whole match for Germany U21s, who next play San Marino in another qualifier on Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, Paul Nebel celebrated a 3-2 victory over France with Germany U20s. Nebel played the full 90 minutes and made it 1-1 from the spot. Fellow Zerofiver Niklas Tauer was also named in the initial squad, but had to pull out due to a slight injury. The Germany U20s’ final match of the international break is against Portugal on Tuesday.
