"We didn't deserve to lose"
Reaction from the Dortmund defeat
Mainz were searching for their sixth straight home win in Wednesday’s rearranged fixture against Borussia Dortmund. Despite a strong performance in a sold-out MEWA ARENA, it was the visitors who came away with all three points. The fans created a memorable atmosphere until the final whistle, but this was just a mere consolation.
Reaction from the Zerofivers:
Moussa Niakhaté: “It is great to hear the fans cheering us on but we are in the results business and we are very disappointed to be leaving empty-handed. It’s even more annoying to lose after playing how we did. The preparation was not ideal, but we are not looking for excuses and we were close to getting something from that game. With our fans and the atmosphere inside the stadium, you are always in the game, and tonight we went toe-to-toe with a great opponent. There are eight games left to win and we want to do it for the fans.”
Robin Zentner: “We are really disappointed to have lost the way we did. I was ready for it today and felt good. We conceded a really cheap goal. You have to do everything to maintain the high standard throughout the game. We were the better team for long periods but we failed to take our chances- That was bitter.”
Silvan Widmer: “It felt like there were two evenly matched teams on the pitch tonight. There weren’t too many chances and a draw would’ve been a fair result. We carried ourselves well and we only had problems between the 60th and 75th minute. The goal came out of nowhere. We are bitter that we are coming away with no points.”
Martin Schmidt: “If you look at how the game went, it isn’t a fair result. We were really good for the first 60 minutes and then we came under a bit of pressure. In the end, it looked as though we would draw the game but then there came a moment where we chucked it away. We deserved a point.”
