Tough contest in friendly win
Mainz defeat Regionalliga side Kickers Offenbach 2-1
Mainz visited Regionalliga side Kickers Offenbach for a friendly during the international break. At the Sana-Sportpark, home to the OFC’S youth training centre, the Zerofivers successfully inaugurated the new pitch with a 2-1 win. Although the hosts were able to take the lead, Sandro Schwarz’s team were later able to win the game with a goal in each half.
The first big moment of the game came from Danny Latza, who hit the post with his free-kick (12’), but the first goal of the game came from OFC striker Jake Hirst with an effort from the other side of the field, putting the hosts in front with a slender lead. Not long after, Gerrit Holtmann, who returned to action after a break with injury, found Karim Onisiwo with a delightful long ball. The Austrian stayed strong and shot from a tight angle to level the score before the break (22’).
The winning goal came from youngster Christian Kinsombi. After some great individual work, a sprint down the right flank and an ice cold shot, the ball was in the net. The effort was so far in the corner, it hit the inside of the post on its way in. The goal gave Mainz their lead and eventual win.
Sandro Schwarz on the game: “You could see that we didn’t always have our rhythm today and were not very fluid on the pitch. We had strong opponents who were at times very difficult to play against. Even though it’s a friendly, you still want to win.”
