Too many mistakes
Mainz 05 were beaten convincingly by the record champions
Mainz 05 were convincingly beaten by record champions Bayern München on Sunday evening on matchday 26. The game in Munich ended 6-0 to the home side. Robert Lewandowski (3’), James Rodriguez (33’) and Kingsley Coman (39’) put the home side 3-0 up before half-time, before James (51’, 55’) and Alphonso Davies (70’) made it 6-0 in the second half.
Sandro Schwarz made three changes following their 1-0 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach last week. Alexander Hack, Karim Onisiwo and Jean-Philippe Mateta came in for Aaron Martin, Anthony Ujah and Robin Quaison.
The game began in a terrible way for the Zerofivers as Lewandowski opened the scoring within three minutes. David Alaba passed the ball into the Polish striker from the left flank, and the number 9 made no mistake putting the ball past Florian Müller. The Zerofivers nearly equalised only two minutes later but Boëtius was unable to hit the target. At the other end, Lewandowski was through one-on-one again with Florian Müller, but this time the Zerofiver’s keeper was able to save the effort (5’). Two minutes later, Mainz 05 had their biggest chance of the game after Boëtius wriggled through a couple of defenders before laying the ball off to Öztunali, who fired his shot wide of Neuer’s goal (7’). Bayern pinned Mainz into their half and the next opportunity fell to Coman who struck the bottom of the post with a curling shot (12’).
Mainz 05 found it difficult to get out of their own half as Bayern continued to dominate possession. Alexander Hack played a nice ball over the top to Mateta who was running through on goal, but Jerome Boateng recovered well and cleared the ball for a corner (16’). Just as the Zerofivers began to grow into the game slightly, Bayern scored their second goal. Joshua Kimmich crossed the ball into Leon Goretzka, who then laid the ball off to James and the Colombian slotted the ball into the bottom corner (33’). Six minutes later, the Zerofivers conceded again, this time Thiago passed the ball to Coman who placed the ball past the keeper (39’).
Errors after the break – Bayern ice cold
At half-time, Sandro Schwarz made his first change of the day with Pierre Kunde Malong replacing Boëtius. Immediately though, Bayern nearly scored as a Niklas Süle header went inches past the post. James then scored his second and third goals of the game within five minutes. Firstly, he slotted the ball home from the edge of the box (51’) before he then received a ball from Thomas Müller and slotted the ball into the back of the net (55’). Mainz 05 then nearly scored after a brilliant bit of combination play between Brosinski and Öztunali, but the cross wasn’t converted by Onisiwo.
The hosts then made it six in the 70th minute as Davies reacted quickest to a rebound. The game ended 6-0. Despite the disappointing result, the Zerofivers are still on 30 points with a ten-point cushion on the relegation zone. On 30th March, Mainz 05 will play away against Werder Bremen.
