Tauer scores, Lee with assist

Mainz’s international update

Nine Mainz players are representing their countries during the current international break. While some are in action for the first time today, others have already been involved and successful – an overview.

Niklas Tauer and Paul Nebel are currently on duty with the Germany U20 squad. The team were in action in a friendly against Italy last night and drew 1-1. Both Nebel and Tauer started the game, with Tauer playing all 90 minutes and opening the scoring to give his side a 1-0 lead. The pair will be in action again on Tuesday afternoon when they take on England U20s at 20:30 CEST.

Midfielder Jae-sung Lee is representing South Korea, who have already secured their place in the upcoming World Cup. Last night, Lee and his team faced off against Iran, who have also already booked their ticket to Qatar. Lee played the whole game and registered an assist, setting up former Bundesliga player Heung-min Son for the opening goal. South Korea will take on UAE in their final World Cup qualifier on Tuesday afternoon (15:45 CEST).

Germany are preparing for two upcoming friendlies during this break, taking on Israel on Saturday evening (20:45 CET) and Netherlands on Tuesday (20:45 CEST). Mainz midfielder Anton Stach, who has been called up by head coach Hansi Flick for the first time, will be hoping to make his international debut.

Widmer takes on England, Bobzien gets short cameo

Jonathan Burkardt, captain of the Germany U21 side, will lead his team into two European Championship qualifying matches against Latvia (Friday, 18:15 CET) and Israel (Tuesday, 17:00 CEST).

Ben Bobzien drew 2-2 against Italy with the German U19 team in their European Championship qualifier. Bobzien was introduced off the bench towards the end of the game and will look to build on his minutes in games against Belgium (Saturday, 11:30 CET) and Finland (Tuesday, 17:30 CEST).

Leandro Barreiro and Luxembourg have two friendlies in store: against Northern Ireland (Friday, 20:15 CET) and Bosnia & Herzegovina (Tuesday, 18:00 CEST)

Nelson Weiper, who recently signed his first professional contract with the club, was victorious with the Germany U17 national team when they took on Georgia. Weiper came on in the 70th minute to help his team to a 3-0 win, scoring the second goal of the game six minutes after coming on. Weiper and his team will take on Scotland on Saturday before facing Czech Republic on Tuesday.

Karim Onisiwo and Austria’s World Cup dream is over. Onisiwo was in the squad but did not feature as his team were defeated 2-1 by Wales in the Qualification semi-final.

Quaison keeps Swedish dream alive

Mainz’s Bundesliga record goalscorer Robin Quaison helped Sweden through to the next round of World Cup qualification, scoring the only goal of the game in extra time as Sweden defeated Czech Republic 1-0. They’ll take on Poland on Tuesday for one of the final World Cup places.
