Tauer extends with Mainz

“I was born in Mainz, I have always supported Mainz, my father played here as a youngster and I will be celebrating my tenth anniversary with the club on 1st July 2022.” Tauer extends until 2025.

The defender has so far made 16 Bundesliga appearances for the club

Homegrown Zerofiver, Niklas Tauer, has extended his contract with Mainz 05. The Mainz native, who came to the FSV youth academy in 2012, signed his first professional contract at the Bruchweg in 2019 and is another example of the successful youth programme at the club. Last season, the 21-year-old made eleven Bundesliga appearances and has developed into a strong defensive all-rounder. Tauer has also represented Germany at U18s, U19s and U20s.

“Alongside his footballing ability, Niklas brings a strong mentality and a great deal of power and we are sure that we will be seeing a lot more of him. He has already shown his potential and his composure in the Bundesliga and his legendary tackle against Leipzig at the beginning of last season has stuck in the memory of every Mainz fan. He still has lots of developing to do and we are looking forward to taking the next steps in his career together,” said sporting director Martin Schmidt.

Tauer has been with the club since 2012

“This contract extension is also a matter of heart. I was born in Mainz, I have always supported Mainz, my father played here as a youngster and I will be celebrating my tenth anniversary with the club on 1st July 2022. It’s a great time to extend my contract. I am far from done here and I am already looking forward to remaining a Zerofiver until at least 2025," said Tauer.
