Task: convert frustration into positive energy

Having analysed mistakes and regenerated from the 3-0 defeat to Wolfsburg, the Zerofivers have a clear aim in mind for Saturday: to beat Schalke 04.

After a successful start of two wins in a row since the winter break, the Zerofivers have now lost three on the bounce. These results has annoyed the boss and it was clear to see as he was seen loudly instructing his players about during training. The most recent defeat was especially frustrating for the head coach: “It was a completely unnecessary defeat,” said the 40-year-old, who spoke to the media on Tuesday about the current morale of the team.

The Mainz 05 coach was not amused when his team were accused of having a bad attitude in the recent games. “Three defeats in a row is very annoying and frustrating for all of us. We’ve been playing well this season, but this is a new situation for us and we have to see how we react. The lads give me the impression that they want to put things right,” said Schwarz. “The results have been nothing to do with our attitude. We just have to do the things we can do and do them well. That’s our job for this week.” It may not be a big issue but many small tweaks will need to be made before the game.

The final third

The small tweaks that need to be changed has been gone over by Schwarz in the form of video analysis. “There were positives from the game. We had good structure and possession up until the final third, but we were not free flowing in their penalty area. We weren’t wide enough and when we did get the ball out wide, the crosses weren’t good enough. These mistakes cost us. We need to be more precise in the final third. The strikers need to be fully alert,” said the coach regarding his attack.

The Zerofivers however, also made two mistakes in defence which lead to goals. “We had to defend better in those situations. Like the third goal. That should’ve been an easy clearance but we were unable to, and they scored, which was simply annoying as no one tried to stop him. Stefan Bell was the only player to react to Arnold’s shot on goal. The others just stood and watched.”

“It’s not only at Mainz”

It's never nice to lose games. Three in a row is not ideal. "We are annoyed by the results, but it can happen to anyone, and young players need to be reminded to forget about the results and focus on getting the basics correct - not only at Mainz 05," said Schwarz.

The Zerofivers however, have always worked together to make things better. On Saturday (15:30 CET), Mainz 05 will face Schalke 04 at home. “The task is to convert the frustration into positive energy. We need to challenge ourselves to put in a top performance in our next game, regardless of whether we have won or lost games before. Saturday is the next opportunity for us to get three points,” said Schwarz. “The goal is to beat Schalke 04.”
