Stach handed first senior Germany call-up

Anton Stach tells us about getting a phone call from Germany head coach Hansi Flick

Anton Stach has quickly settled into life in the Bundesliga and at Mainz 05.

Anton Stach moved from promoted Greuther Fürth to 1. FSV Mainz 05 last summer, and has since gone on to make 21 Bundesliga appearances (1 goal) for the club, in addition to winning the U21 EUROs and taking part in the Olympics. Stach is now a regular starter in central midfield for FSV. While the 23-year-old will miss this weekend’s match against Arminia Bielefeld with a yellow-card suspension, he was able to feature for a solid hour against BVB in midweek. Germany head coach Hansi Flick was in attendance at the MEWA ARENA for the game, and contacted Stach the next day to let him know he had been called up to the senior side for the first time.

In a short interview, Stach talks about how he felt upon hearing the news, while also thanking the coaching staff and club for always having his back.

Congratulations, Anton! How surprised were you to hear that you had been called up?

Stach: “Thank you, I was very surprised. I don’t think anyone ever expects to get that call. I’m very proud that all my hard work is being rewarded. My family are also very proud. I’m still a little speechless at what’s happened, but I’m also really excited.”

Hansi Flick was at the game on Wednesday. When did you learn of his decision?

Stach: "I heard about it yesterday. I was driving with Andy Lucoqui. He wanted to listen to music on my cell phone, and saw that I had a missed call. He then put my phone on speakerphone and called back. When Hansi introduced himself, we both just stared at each other and I had to really pay attention to where I was going. I made two wrong turns. I was absolutely stunned. We spoke for a little bit, and I wasn’t able to get a good night’s sleep last night because of it. Because the squad was only released today, Andy also had to make sure to keep quiet until then.”

You signed from a second-division side in the summer, and are now a regular starter in the Bundesliga. The call-up isn’t just a recognition of the club’s work, but also your rapid development….

Stach: “It’s something you dream of, but you never imagine that everything could go so quickly. The fact that it’s happened so quickly is also due to the trust the coach and the team here have shown in me. I feel really at home and was warmly welcomed, which is very important. It’s incredible.”
