Second friendly also finishes 2-2
Mainz and Freiburg can’t be separated over two games.
There are no points on offer in a friendly game, but it’s still annoying to come away without a win after leading three games 2-0. In their final match in Spain, Mainz conceded the equaliser five minutes before full time.
Much of the game was played in midfield towards the start, and the first real chance led to the first goal. Jean-Philippe Mateta played a pass to Alexandru Maxim after Freiburg lost the ball in their own half, and he put Mainz in front on 17 minutes. Freiburg almost equalised just three minutes later, but Lucas Höler was denied by Robin Zentner. Aarón hit the post and Robin Quaison also could have doubled the lead, but Mainz went in just 1-0 up at half time.
Just like in the game this morning, things changed in the second half. Daniel Brosinski put the 05ers 2-0 up, but any joy was short-lived. Lucas Höler got one back for Freiburg with a penalty before Lukas Kübler levelled things. Alex Maxim had a chance to win the game just before the full-time whistle, but his header flashed wide of the post.
