Schwarz: We definitely could’ve taken more today
Post match reaction to the 2-1 defeat away against Hertha BSC on carnival weekend
Sandro Schwarz: Congratulations to Pal and his Hertha team. Of course today’s result is very annoying. We attacked well in the first half, defended well in a compact formation and didn’t allow Hertha any chances to score. We managed to created two or three good chances ourselves to score and this gave us a good feeling going into half-time. This paid off as we took the lead right at the start of the second half. After Hertha equalised, it took us a couple of minutes to respond. We couldn’t keep hold of the ball and we also were not clearing the ball well. Hertha were forcing us under pressure and it eventually paid off as they took the lead. We went on to create two more very good chances through Anthony Ujah and Robin Quaison. On reflection, of course we definitely could’ve taken more from today’s match.
Pal Dardai: We didn’t play well in the first half, we didn’t perform anywhere near where we can based on previous performances. I never had the feeling during the first half that we fully wanted to win the match. At half-time, we remained calm and patient, correcting a couple of things we didn’t do well in the first period. The goal we conceded was unfortunate but we continued to build upon our style of play. The players managed to turn the match around and I’m glad we were able to secure victory against a good Mainz side. Sandro set his team up very well for today’s match.
