Schwarz excited for 2019 games to start
The Zerofivers travel with a clear aim of getting three points in Stuttgart. Latza a doubt, competition every in the team.
The head coach is very excited for the start of the second half of the season, and his anticipation is based off the past two weeks and the training camp in Spain. The players completed meticulously precise and highly concentrated training session, where the coaches installed their tactics into the players under the sun. It was very clear during the press conference that the team is raring to go for the first game of the second half of the season (VfB Stuttgart (A), Saturday 15:30 CET).
“We have a clear aim and that is to start 2019 with a win in VfB Stuttgart and to claim the three points,” said Schwarz, who not only wants to get the points, but also implement his tactics that he coached the players over the winter period. VfB Stuttgart, who are currently sat in 16th, one points above the relegation zone, have seven points less than the Zerofivers. The head coach expects a very good atmosphere in the Mercedes-Benz arena.
Schröder: “Good statement of the club”
In is not yet decided how Mainz 05 will line-up in Stuttgart. There is also the question of whether Danny Latza will be able to play or not. “Danny hurt his calf in training so we have to wait and see, but in midfield, like other positions in the team, the positions are still up for grabs. We have to pick players based on how we want to play. It’s going to be hard to decide but that is a good thing,” said Schwarz, who also mentioned that Gerrit Holtmann and Issah Abass are both available too. “We have several players who have made good progress and are all at a very good level now.” However, it is clear now that Florian Müller will return to in-between the sticks for the upcoming games.
The upcoming opponents have signed two Bundesliga players in Alexander Esswein (Hertha BSC) and Steven Zuber (Hoffenheim), but Mainz will still be looking for a repeat result from earlier in the season. “We have to be prepared for the changes that they have made because they will now have more speed.” Sporting Director Rouven Schröder and head coach Sandro Schwarz have ruled out any signings in January for the Zerofivers. “We did a good job before the season started. The coaching team, the scouts, everyone made the right decisions when signing players before the season started and this a good statement from the club,” Schröder explained.
Three players are definitely ruled out of the game; René Adler and Emil Berggreen are both in rehabilitation training whilst Jonathan Burkardt is recovering from dead leg. Latza and Karim Onisiwo are the two doubts, with Onisiwo still fighting an illness and has not returned to full training yet.
