ROUVEN SCHRÖDER NO LONGER SPORTING DIRECTOR

Schröder: "If everyone works together for each other, Mainz will stay in the league, I am firmly convinced of that and that is what it is all about."

Rouven Schröder has been the sporting director at Mainz since the summer of 2016.

Rouven Schröder is no longer the sporting director of Mainz 05. The 45-year-old reached an agreement with the Bundesliga football club on Tuesday to prematurely terminate his contract, which was originally set to run until 2024.

Rouven Schröder says: "The decision to leave the club was not easy for me. Mainz 05, the club, the team, the staff and the city have grown close to my heart over the past few years, and that's not something you can easily give up. However, for my work and for my commitment, I have to stand behind what I do 100 per cent. I had the feeling that it is better for the club and for me to move on so that Mainz 05 can reposition itself as a whole," said the 45-year-old.

"This is not a decision forced by the club or individuals, but a decision based on my personal conviction. If everyone works together for each other, Mainz will stay in the league, I am firmly convinced of that and that is what it is all about. I wish Mainz 05 and everyone associated with the club all the best for the future. Thank you for an exciting time, from which I take many positive memories and experiences with me!"

He has fought tirelessly for Mainz 05 in recent years and has been instrumental in keeping the club on course in difficult times.

Chairman of the board, Detlev Höhne says: "Rouven Schröder asked us to terminate his contract on Tuesday morning. The Supervisory Board has accepted this decision with regret because we would have very much liked to retain Rouven Schröder's competence and expertise at our club. He has fought tirelessly for Mainz 05 in recent years and has been instrumental in keeping the club on course in difficult times. For this he deserves our respect and thanks. We wish him all the best for the future and will remain positively connected to him.

Rouven Schröder's decision also influences our further planning. It was planned that Christian Heidel would join our board as an additional member alongside Stefan Hofmann, Rouven Schröder and Jan Lehmann in order to better position the club for the strategic issues of the future. Due to current developments, Christian Heidel has now asked for time to think things over. We will discuss over the Christmas holidays how the operation will look under the changed conditions."
