Returning to Mainz in high spirits
Despite a 2-1 friendly defeat to Jahn Regensburg, the first defeat of pre-season, 05ers head coach Sandro Schwarz is taking the positives out of the training camp in Grassau.
The pre-season training camp has come to an end. 1. FSV Mainz 05 have spent a week training in the Bavarian resort of Grassau im Chiemgau ahead of the new Bundesliga season. Sandro Schwarz’s side will travel back to Mainz on Monday. “We’re satisfied and are flying home in high spirits,” said the 05ers head coach. Mainz carry their high spirits home despite suffering their first defeat of the summer against Bundesliga 2 side Jahn Regensburg in their final friendly of the training camp in Kirchheim bei München. In a match consisting of four 30 minute quarters, the 05ers fell to a 2-1 defeat.
“We know we have to do things better ahead of the start of the new season,” said Schwarz following the friendly against a tough Regensburg side who showed more freshness and power ahead the start of the 2019/20 Bundesliga 2 season next week. However, Schwarz thought it was sheer coincidence that the difference in preparations was evident in the opening stages. “We were tired at the beginning of the match,” said the 40 year-old. “We have already seen what can happen if we don’t show any intensity when we are not in possession. Mentally, we were too slow and we also were a step too late in winning the ball.” The 05ers were also not active enough in their build-up play at times.
Regensburg goals change overall picture
Jahn Regensburg proved to be the stronger side in the friendly, pressing the 05ers defence backwards early on, forcing them to make mistakes and struggle to find open spaces. The second tier side successfully managed to break up Mainz’s rhythm. “However, when we managed to break through their first press, we managed to attack well and create some good chances to score,” added the head coach. “We continued to enjoy good phases when in possession and should’ve scored in some of those situation.”
The goals conceded seemed to tarnish the overall picture. The first Regensburg goal came from a corner where the goalkeeper and defence should’ve dealt with the ball better. “The second goal was down to us,” said the 05ers head coach. “We lost control of the situation initially and couldn’t recover.” Mainz simply lost possession and ended up conceding a penalty. “This is exactly why we play friendlies. We wanted to find a solution on the pitch to the problems we face when we are under pressure,” explained Schwarz. From the 60th to the 120th minute, Schwarz can be satisfied with how his team performed and “how we worked and how the team was ready to work. We were certainly more active in the closing stages and could’ve turned the match around.” As the match progressed, the 05ers grew increasingly tired and lacked the precision needed to draw level in the match. “The result is irritating but you get a picture of what you can do better as well the things you do well. This is everything you need to analyse,” added Schwarz.
Giving everything possible in training
The team have developed during their time in Bavaria, have had fun working together and have showed a desire to work hard. “There was no training session in which we could’ve given a single millimetre extra,” said a satisfied Sandro Schwarz. This also was the case during the friendlies even if a fresh step was lacking at times. “We have seen a lot of development based on the exercises in each session. We have put the foundations in place for our attacking game. We have showed good technique so far.”
The team are still missing the defensive stability in the final moments. “This isn’t tactical,” said Schwarz. This depends on the players together with the preparations made as a full team. The full 05ers squad are now back together after the late arrivals following the U21s European Championships and everyone has played a part in pre-season so far. The younger players have showed they are ready to step up if called upon. The academy players will continue to train with the first team until the OPEL CUP in the OPEL ARENA on Saturday as Mainz take on Everton and Sevilla.
