Return of the number 28 – Szalai is a Zerofiver once again
The 31-year-old has signed from Hoffenheim until 2021
Old acquaintance, new contract – 1. FSV Mainz 05 have signed Ádám Szalai. The Hungary international, who wore the Mainz colours from 2010 to 2013, will return to the Bruchweg until 2021. The 31-year-old will wear number 28 again after joining on a free transfer from league rivals TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. He scored 6 goals (5 assists) in 37 competitive games in the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League for the Kraichgauer last season.
"Ádám Szalai could be the puzzle piece we were missing - he is great both on and off the pitch, and as an experienced striker in his prime, he is strong on the ball and incredibly dangerous in the box. Ádám knows where the goal is, has a good character and has great leadership qualities. He will enrich, improve and lead our attack. You don’t have to explain Mainz to Ádám and he wanted to come back to us the minute he was transfer listed so we seized the opportunity straight away. We’re happy that he is back here in Mainz," said sporting director Rouven Schröder.
“An emotional moment”
Mainz head coach Sandro Schwarz added: "Ádám Szalai is a strong, physical striker who is also great in front of goal. He knows the club and our philosophy as well as having a good character and being a team player who always gives everything he has."
"To re-sign here is an emotional moment for me. When I drove into town yesterday, a lot of great memories were going through my head on the drive back in. There were a few other offers, but I'm glad I didn’t rush things - the decision to come here was the right one, I felt it. Now it's time to focus on the tasks ahead, and I'm looking forward to this new challenge and to stepping out on to the pitch for the Zerofivers again," said Ádám Szalai.
