René Adler retires

The former national team goalkeeper will no longer play a part on the field

René Adler will retire at the end of the season at Mainz 05. He played his last game on 29th April 2018 against RB Leipzig where he picked up a very bad knee injury. Since his transfer to Mainz 05 in the summer of 2017, the goalkeeper completed 14 Bundesliga games and three DFB Pokal games for the Zerofivers.

René Adler: “Mainz is a nice place to end my carrier as a footballer. After my intense time at Hamburg, I found Mainz to be a very nice environment to work in as it was mainly about the football and enjoying playing football. As an older player in a younger team, they had got me going again. I wish I could have played more and other than my injury, I have had a wonderful time here. I have been really happy to be here and have loved the city, the people and the region. I have made friends here who I will stay in touch with even after my football career ends.”
