Promotion anniversary celebrations marked with two friendlies & high emotions

Zerofivers mark 10th and 15th anniversaries since Bundesliga promotion with legends match at the Bruchweg stadium

From Nikolce Noveski to Elkin Soto, Benjamin Auer, Michael Thurk, Srdjan Baljak and Dimo Wache: 1. FSV Mainz 05 were delighted to welcome some of their 2004 and 2009 Bundesliga promotion heroes back to the Bruchweg stadium on Friday evening to celebrate two historic milestones. The second milestone, sealed on 23rd May 2009, has helped the club progress to the position it currently finds itself in – a tenth consecutive season in the top flight.

Celebrations in the Bruchweg stadium began with a mixed legends teams facing some of the players who played against Mainz as final opponents in the 2003/04 and 2008/09 Bundesliga seasons. Representatives of both Eintracht Trier and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen were there to take on the former Mainz players in two friendlies. The visitors took the spoils in the first friendly 4-2 before Mainz won the entertaining, goal-laden friendly 7-5. However, both results were of minor importance on this celebratory evening. Around 4,000 Zerofiver fans watched on to enjoy the spectacle, which even saw current head coach Sandro Schwarz play with his 2004 promotion winning teammates. Goalkeeping coach Stephan Kuhnert took over the coaching duties.

Alongside the players on the pitch, there were a series of guests invited to the proceedings from the stands. These included former Mainz manager Christian Heidel, former club president Harald Strutz as well as stadium announcer Klaus Hafner, who announced last weekend that he was retiring after this season concluded. Alongside the two friendlies, other highlights included a pitch invasion after the match (similar to the pitch invasion ten years ago), a promotion film being shown on a giant screen in the centre of the stadium (which included a reminiscing Jürgen Klopp) as well as a musical performance featuring current head coach Sandro Schwarz alongside Oliver Mager. The pair performed Mager’s hit “Verliebt in eine Stadt.”

Following the conclusion of the celebrations, the players met in the Haasekessel players lounge to exchange memories and to look back on two of the greatest moments in Mainz 05 history.
