“Our opponents were simply very clinical today”
Reaction to Union defeat
Despite a relatively evenly-matched opening 45 minutes, the Zerofivers trailed 1-0 to Union at half time. Mainz enjoyed some decent possession in the first half but were haunted by their lack of a cutting edge. Despite coming up against a clinical opponent, Mainz were ultimately let down by their second half performance as Robin Zentner, goalscorer Delano Burgzorg and their teammates explain.
Reaction from Berlin
Robin Zentner: “It is a frustrating defeat today because we didn’t put in a good away performance. We were a bit unlucky to concede the way we did in the first half but they didn’t have too many chances after that, even though we didn’t create much ourselves. In the second half we didn’t play that well and didn’t have many goal scoring opportunities except for the goal at the end. We gave our opponents too much space and came off second best in the duels. After the red card the game was effectively over and we deserved to lose.”
Jonny Burkardt: “We were unlucky to concede so early on today because it meant we were chasing the game, but we actually played well in the first half. We had a lot of set-pieces and some dangerous moments but we lacked that cutting edge. In the second half, the game was more even but union slightly edged it. But the pendulum swung heavily in Union’s favour after the red card. In the end a 3-1 defeat is tough to take. We will continue to work in training over the next week and improve on the little things that tipped the game in Union’s favour today. We’ll go into the next home game revitalised.”
Delano Burgzorg: “Of course I am happy to have scored my first Bundesliga goal for Mainz and I hope more will follow, but unfortunately we lost the game. We played well in the first half but when Becker scored we didn’t put enough pressure on the ball and gave them too much space. I think that was our mistake today. After that, we didn’t create many goal scoring opportunities and we have to do better next time out.”
Stefan Bell: “The second half was especially frustrating today because the first half was evenly matched. In terms of overall play and chances created we maybe even edged it. Our opponents were simply very clinical today and the game was beyond us after the sending off.”
