New challenges, new solutions
The Zerofivers want to experience their second win of the season this Friday and this time, against Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Six days after the game against top-of-the-table Borussia Dortmund, Mainz 05 will face Fortuna Düsseldorf away (20:30 CET). The promoted team are currently second bottom of the table and have six points less than Mainz. They recently drew 3-3 with record champions Bayern München and that is a stellar warning to Sandro Schwarz’s team that their intensity will have to be at a max.
It has been a long time since the Zerofivers played Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga, with the last game being a 1-1 draw back in May 2013. Fortuna were promoted in the Summer and have picked up four points from their last two games (4-1 victory over Hertha BSC and 3-3 draw with Bayern München). “We will have to respect them. They have developed well and have a good coach in Friedhelm Funkel,” said Sandro Schwarz, who has enough reasons to be wary of the opposition.
“We want to take control on the pitch”
“We go into every game, with the aim of getting three points. Against Dortmund, it was exactly the same and it was definitely possible. Depending on the opposition, of course there will be some alterations in the team,” said the head coach. However, the Zerofivers base tactic: defending from the front with maximum intensity and fighting for every ball will still be installed, regardless of personnel. “We want to take control of the difficult away game,” said Schwarz, who wants his team to have more possession against Fortuna compared to the game against Dortmund. For this new challenge against a team closer to the bottom of the table, like every game, we have to work hard to find solutions and to make it hard for them. “We want to bring a good performance and a hard working mentality to the pitch,” said Schwarz. Then there is the possibility that we can end the day on a high.
A second away win after the 3-1 victory against SC Freiburg will not be easy and sporting director Rouven Schröder knows this: “Every week shows us that every team in the league can win games. Düsseldorf will be full of confidence right now. It is therefore very important to learn from the past and focus on ourselves.” Sandro Schwarz has stressed that being favourites or underdogs means nothing to the team. “For us tomorrow, we need to make sure we are secure against the counter, defend well and press the ball hard together. That is the basis for us to be successful.” There will be around 1750 Zerofiver’s fans travelling. René Adler, Florian Müller, Ridle Baku and Emil Berggreen are all not available and there are still question marks as to whether Jannik Huth and Philipp Mwene will be available.
