Merveille Papela has signed a professional contract with Mainz 05 until 2023. The 18-year-old midfielder got his start playing with the Mainz U11s and is a product of the club’s youth academy. Papela, who is currently active with the Mainz U19s in the U19 Bundesliga South/Southwest, took part in pre-season with the first team this summer. The Mainz native has also made his way up through the national team youth setup.

“Merveille Papela left a lasting impression during the training sessions, as well as our pre-season friendlies this summer. He has done the same with the U19s, where he applies the same level of commitment and focus to his everyday tasks. Part of our philosophy is to find and develop talents from our youth setup, so that they can become part of the first team. Merveille is the latest young player to have the chance to work hard to take his next steps with us,” said Mainz sporting director Rouven Schröder.

“As a Mainz native, who has been with the club for four years now, Merveille Papela is a great example of what our youth academy stands for. We want to help guide young players for as many years as possible and prepare them for whatever comes next. Merveille has worked hard to improve. I’m extremely happy for him and am looking forward to watching him take the next step in his career with Mainz 05,” said Volker Kersting, the director of the Mainz youth academy.
