“Mercilessly put away chances”

Robin Quaison scored again for Sweden, this time against Norway. Schröder: “Him in form is good for us”

Internationals can have a good effect on players, especially when things are not going to plan at your own club. At Mainz 05, many players reported back from their international games with positive experiences. Robin Quaison, Levin Öztunali, Leandro Barreiro and Jonathan Burkardt all scored over the international break. The returnees have started preparations for their game against Werder Bremen on the weekend.

Quaison had already scored in the game against Romania last week. In Sweden’s game against Norway, the striker scored a 91st minute goal to put the Swedes in front. However, the game finished 3-3 thanks to a late equaliser from the Norwegians. Two goals over the international break for the 25-year-old wil give him renewed confidence and motivation for the Bundesliga games. “Robin had chances and took them mercilessly,” said Rouven Schröder. “His performance in this game shows that he is in good form, which is good for us. Robin has worked for this status,” said the sporting director.

Quaison’s team mates should also have regained some self-confidence after the harsh defeat in Munich. For example, Florian Müller made his debut for the Germany U21s, having missed out due to injury in the last couple international breaks. He received good feedback in both the 2-2 draw with France and the 2-1 victory over England. Öztunali, Moussa Niakhaté and Jean-Philippe Mateta all also played.

Positive signs

Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Kunde Malong both claimed victories with their respective countries, whilst Karim Onisiwo made his comeback to the national team. Barreiro, who equalized for Luxembourg in their 2-1 victory over Lithuania, also played 90 minutes in their 2-1 defeat to Ukraine. Ridle Baku played an important part in Germany U20s victory over Poland. The signs are positive, the individual performances are looking good. Hopefully Sandro Schwarz and his team can end their bad run of form when they take on Werder Bremen on matchday 27.
