Mateta: No dive, no apology

Goalscorer comments on today’s penalty

After colliding with Kevin Wimmer and Matthias Ostrzolek, Mateta won a penalty for Mainz.

1. FSV Mainz 05 went behind early on against Hannover 96 on Sunday afternoon. Despite a number of chances and a strong second-half performance, it looked like Mainz wouldn’t get their deserved equaliser until Jean-Philippe Mateta was felled with four minutes to go. Daniel Brosinski converted the subsequent penalty and thus earned his side a point.

After the game, a number of the Hannover players wanted an apology from the Mainz striker. Mateta himself remembered the incident differently and gave his own opinion on the matter: “It wasn’t a dive – there was contact and I was running. I wanted to shake hands with my opponents after the game, but I wasn’t going to apologise for something that I didn’t do,” explained the Frenchman.
