Mainz to play derby against Kaiserslautern in DFB-Pokal first round
The first official match of the 2019/20 season will see 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Mainz 05 face off in a derby for the first time since 2012
Mainz 05 will play their first official match of the 2019/20 season against third-division 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the first round of the DFB-Pokal (9th to 12th August 2019). That was the result of the draw in the German football museum in Dortmund on 15th June. The exact date of the match is still to be determined. This marks the first time since the 2011/12 season that the two will face each other in a Rheinland-Pflaz derby.
“Both we and the fans can look forward to once again to a real Rheinland-Pfalz derby at Betzenberg. We know what the atmosphere is like in Kaiserslautern, but as a Bundesliga side we definitely want to go in as the favourites and achieve our goals in the DFB-Pokal,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder.
“We’ve drawn an exciting opponent by having a derby in Kaiserslautern. Having a derby right away in the first round is great! We will eagerly approach this task, and do our best to be successful in order to advance further in the Pokal than we did last season,” said head coach Sandro Schwarz.
