Mainz sign striker Cyrill Akono
The 19-year-old will head to the Bruchweg after playing in the third division
The Zerofivers have added to their offensive strength by signing striker Cyrill Akono. The 19-year-old will move from Preußen Münster to join Mainz for the upcoming 2019/20 season. This season, Akono played 15 matches (four goals, one assist) in the third division as well as 11 matches in the Junior A division of the Bundesliga West (10 goals, two assists). Akono also spent time with Germany’s U19 team in April. The German-Cameroonian has signed with Mainz until 2023.
“Cyrill Akono is a highly-gifted, young forward who has shown his ability to play multiple positions on offence. He has made the decision to come here to take the next step in his career. He is a very determined and focused young man with a solid character. We will guide him through the ranks here, from the reserves to the first team,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder.
“Mainz are known for being a place where young players can obtain the necessary time and trust needed in order to take their careers to the next step. That’s my goal, but I want to do so with care. For me, it’s more important that I develop myself step-by-step, rather than taking the fastest route. I’m excited to take my next steps together with Mainz 05,” said Cyrill Akono.
