Mainz beaten convincingly
Quaison equaliser not enough - Zerofivers collapse before half-time
On Matchday 21, Mainz 05 suffered their third home defeat against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Friday evening. The Zerofivers lost 5-1 as goals from Wendell (4’), Kai Havertz (19’), Julian Brandt (30’, 64’) and Bellarabi (43’) for the away side blew away Quaison’s equaliser (9’).
Sandro Schwarz had made three changes to his starting XI in comparison to last weekend’s defeat to FC Augsburg. The suspended Stefan Bell, Kunde Malong both returned, whilst Leandro Barreiro made his Bundesliga debut, replacing Ridle Baku, Danny Latza and Jean-Philippe Gbamin for the carnival game.
The game began with a bang. The first chance of the game fell to Jean-Philippe Mateta, who after being played through on goal by Aaron Martin, was only able to hit his shot straight at the Leverkusen goalkeeper. Three minutes later however, the away side took the lead through Wendell. Alexander Hack tried to clear the ball, but his pass was intercepted by Leon Bailey, who found Bellarabi, who then crossed the ball into the middle where Wendell was free to slot the ball home (4’). However, the Zerofivers equalised within five minutes, as Quaison tapped home after a Hack’s flick-on from a corner (9’). However, this then only brought an onslaught from the opposition.
Leverkusen make things clear
The next chance for the away side left the Mainz goalkeeper with no chance. A darting run by Julian Brandt down the left wing, followed by a cutback to Havertz, who caressed the ball into the bottom corner, put the away team back in the lead (19’). Mainz had the opportunity to equalise immediately once again, but Mateta was unable to finish after being played in by Quaison. Only a minute later, Leverkusen grabbed a third, this time Brandt finding the scoresheet after playing a one-two with Kevin Volland. Just before half-time, Aaron Martin saw an effort crash off the crossbar. A chance for Mainz was once again followed by a Leverkusen goal. Brandt crossed the ball into Bellarabi, who slammed the ball into the back of the net (43’).
Mainz came out in the second half fighting, but Leverkusen dominated the possession. Another one-two between Brandt and Volland resulted in another goal for Brandt, his second of the night and leaving Müller with no chance between the sticks (64’). Leverkusen continued to dominate the possession, as the Zerofivers could not seem to find another gear. It was a forgettable night at the Opel Arena. Gerrit Holtmann, who made his comeback from injury, had a chance in the last minute after a superb through ball from Gbamin, but Holtmann’s touch let him down after he had rounded the goalkeeper. This miss summed up the Zerofiver’s night. After 21 games, Mainz are still with 27 points. The Zerofivers will have the opportunity to add to their tally when they face VfL Wolfsburg next Saturday (15:30 CET).
